Request for volunteers at Battlefield High School -- interviewing and hiring skills for sophomore English classes.
Monday, April 26, and Tuesday, April 27
Greetings! Many of you have been wonderful in supporting Battlefield High School students in exploring future careers and related skills over the past several years; others of you have expressed interest in participating in Battlefield career events but have been unavailable for specific dates in the past; finally, a few of you may have been identified by a teacher at Battlefield as possibly becoming involved with career and job exploration with students.
We appreciate your past support and potential interest in continuing to work with Battlefield students!
Sophomore (10th grade) English classes at Battlefield High School in Haymarket, Virginia typically spend some time learning about and practicing career exploration, resume writing, and interviewing.
This year, during the school day on Monday, April 26, and Tuesday, April 27, we would like to have these English classes hear from business people about what skills can help or hurt a job seeker in the interview and hiring process:
• what are good interviewing skills (e.g., manner of speaking, level of interest in and enthusiasm for the job in question)?
• what are good (and not so good!) non-verbal skills (e.g., hand shake, eye contact, body language, appropriate dress)? and
• any other interviewing and related job-search skills that you think might be important for high school students to hear. Most of these skills would seem to fall under the general heading of "communications," but there may be other general hiring "do's and don't's" in your experience that you'd like to share with students.
We're looking for business people who would be willing and available to come into school for a part of the school day to speak with one or several English classes for 15-20 minutes and, if/as time allows, answer questions and perhaps try a mock interview with a willing student. Ideally, we would like to have more than one business person per classroom (meaning each would only need to speak for 5-10 minutes) so that students can hear more than one perspective.
If you or someone else in your organization would be interested and available to help with this, please let me know which of the following times you might be most available to help (or if some other configuration of times would work better for you):
Monday, April 26 7:45-9:00 a.m. 9:00-10:00 a.m. 10:00-11:00 a.m. 12:30-1:45 p.m. Tuesday, April 27 7:45-9:00 a.m. 9:00-10:00 a.m. 10:00-11:00 a.m. 12:30-1:45 p.m.
Thanks so much for your continued support of Battlefield High School students! Sincerely, Emily McPhie NOVA Career Coach at Battlefield High School
